To calculate how efficient a system is you will need to use both of the following variables:
The result you get from using this calculator is a single percentage. That percentage represents how efficient the system is that you outlined. The closer that the number is to 100%, the more efficient it is. But there is no case where efficiency can be 100%, or greater.
Calculating how efficient a system is can be done with the help of our tool. We designed our tool to be easy and simple to use. The steps involved in using the tool include:
Lets say we want to find out how efficiency our new air conditioner is. We will be using this tool to help us calculate this value. We will first need to find how much energy is required to power it and how much comes out of the system. The system runs off of 750 watt-hours of energy and outputs 350 watt-hours worth of it. We will first enter 750 into the input field and then change the unit to watt-hours, then we will enter 350 into the output field and change the unit field again to watt-hours. We can now hit calculate to find that our new air conditioner is 46.67% efficient. This means it is able to transfer 46.67% of the power it gets back out to the users.
Typically, the more energy efficient a system is, the better. The optimal scenario is when the energy input equals the energy output, maximizing efficiency.
No, energy efficiency can only be as low as zero, which would indicate that no input energy is being effectively used. It cannot be a negative value.
With current technology, it is impossible for any system to achieve 100% efficiency due to inevitable energy losses, primarily as heat. Practical systems always have an efficiency below 100%.
If a system has 75% efficiency, it means that it is capable of converting 75% of the supplied input energy into useful output work, while the remaining 25% is lost as waste, often as heat.
