It is exactly what it sounds like, the density of a certain body of water. Just like every other item, object, liquid, or thing in this world, water also has a density value that depends on several variables.

How do you Calculate the Density of Water?

Calculating the density of water can be done with when you have values or the following variables:

  • Water temperature

  • Salinity

  • Pressure
Once you have these values, you can plug them into a formula. The formula is:

Where:
  • WD = Water Density

  • PWD = Pure Water Density (water density at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, 0 salinity, and 1 atmosphere of pressure)

  • T = Water Temperature

  • S = Salinity

  • P = Pressure

Understanding Your Results

Your result is a single number that is displayed in kilograms per cubic meter by default, but can be converted into a number of different units if needed by selecting them from the dropdown menu. This number shown will represent the density of the water in your specific scenario.

You may notice, by default there are values in each field. The values there would represent pure water density and are there for you to simply hit calculate if you need to find the density of that.

How to Use the Water Density Tool

  3. Enter the pressure value, by default 1 is entered as it is part of the pure water scenario.

  4. Double-check your entries and ensure you selected the proper units for each field.

  5. Hit calculate and get the density of water!

Example Calculation

Let's say you wanted to find the density of a salt water pool. You keep the pool at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, have a salinity level of 3 permille and the pressure is 1 atmosphere. We can use this tool to find the density of the water by entering each value into its appropriate field.

With each value entered into the right field and the proper units selected we can now hit calculate to get a water density of 995.9979 kilograms per cubic meter. If we need this answer in pounds per cubic inch we can simply select that from the dropdown menu and our answer is converted into that to be .036.
