Bullet energy is the measure of kinetic energy that a bullet will have after being fired. It is often measured in joules but can also be measured in foot-pounds.

How do you Calculate Bullet Energy?

The energy of a bullet can be found with just two variables:

  • Bullet mass

  • Bullet velocity

Once you have a value for each of these variables they can be put to use with this formula to find the bullet's energy:

Understanding Your Results

The answer will be a single number that represents the kinetic energy of the bullet, which will be displayed in joules by default. You can change this to another unit of energy by selecting it from the dropdown menu.

How to Use the Bullet Energy Tool

Calculating the energy of a bullet has never been easier. In just a few steps you can get your result. The steps include:

  1. Enter the mass of the bullet.

  2. Enter the velocity of the bullet.

  3. Ensure your entries are correct and the units of measurement for them align with your intended value.

  4. Hit calculate and get your bullet energy result!

Example Calculation

Let's say the ammo we are using have a mass of 150 grains and with our current set up is capable of having a velocity of 980 feet per second. We can use this tool to find its velocity, first we would enter 150 into the bullet mass field and change the unit to be grains. Then we would enter 980 into the bullet velocity field and leave the unit as feet per second.

We can now hit calculate to get our bullet energy of 433.62 joules. If we need this answer in foot-pounds we can choose that unit from the dropdown and we will automatically have our answer calculated to be 319.82 foot-pounds.

Bullet Energy - Frequently Asked Questions

There may be some external factors that can affect the bullet energy. Some of these may include wind, weapon attachments, and if the surface is covered by anything or not.
