Golf can be a tough sport, to even the field and have a better way of players explaining their skill set, handicap was born. It is a number that a golfer can expect to score over the course par. The lower the handicap of a player, the better they are expected to be.

How is Golf Handicap Calculated?

Golf handicap can be calculated a few different ways. The way that this calculator employs involves the following variables:

  • Index of your handicap

  • Course rating

  • Course slope rating

  • Course par score

  • H = Handicap

  • HI = Handicap index

  • CS = Course slope

  • CR = Course rating

  • CP = Course par

Understanding Your Results

Your handicap result will always be a whole number. There are no decimals with handicap, so if your calculated result is not a whole number it will be rounded to the nearest whole number before being displayed. The number that you will see is what you can expect to shoot above par on a course like the one you outline. This number is what you can share with other golfers to gauge who may be more skilled and who may not be. The higher the handicap score the less skillful the player, the lower the handicap the more skillful the golfer is.

Our handicap index is 15, the course rating is 72, the course slope rating is 125, and the par for the course is 80. Using this tool we can find our handicap by entering each value into the correct field. With all the values inserted, we can now hit calculate and get a handicap rating of 9. That means we are expected to go 9 over par for the course.

Golf Handicap - Frequently Asked Questions

If a player has a handicap of 12 they are expected to be 12 strokes over par for the course. So if a course has an 80-stroke par, that player would be expected to finish the course with 92 strokes.

To be a PGA pro, a male will need to have a handicap of 4.4 or better while a female will need a handicap of 6.4 or better.

A scratch golfer is essentially someone who can play a course and have a handicap of zero. This is a master player of the game and is someone who is expected to do well.

It is believed that men on average have a handicap around 16 while women have about a 28.
