If a player has a handicap of 12 they are expected to be 12 strokes over par for the course. So if a course has a 80-stroke par, that player would be expected to finish the course with 92 strokes.
To be a PGA pro, a male will need to have a handicap of 4.4 or better while a female will need a handicap of 6.4 or better.
A scratch golfer is essentially someone who can play a course and have a handicap of zero. This is a master player of the game and is someone who is expected to do good.
It is believed that men on average have a handicap around 16 while women have about a 28.
