With the current technology, drones can fly for a surprisingly long amount of time in some cases. It is highly dependent on the quality of your drone and its all up weight (AUW), but some can stay in the air for hours while others can't reach an hour.

How do you Calculate Drone Flight Time?

Calculating how long a drone can fly for is a tricky problem to solve. There are numerous variables that play a role in this, which are:

  • Battery capacity

  • Batter discharge

  • Battery voltage

  • All up weight
We will use all of these values to find the overall usable energy in watt-hours and the overall power consumption then use this formula to find the estimated drone flight time:

Your result from this tool is very straightforward, it represents the amount of time that the drone can fly in air for before needing to be brought down to be charged. This value is shown in minutes by default but can be changed to appear in other units of time measurement.

How to Use the Drone Flight Time Tool

Our drone flight time tool may have a handful of variables that need to have values but it is still very easy and quick to use. The steps involved include:

  1. Enter the total battery capacity of the drone, adjusting the unit of measurement if needed.

  2. Enter a new battery discharge percent if 80% is not desired. This number represents how much battery should be spent before needing to be charged.

  3. Enter the battery voltage.

  4. Enter the all up weight of the drone, adjusting the pounds unit of measurement if needed.

  5. Hit calculate and get your answer!

Example Calculation

Let's say we are evaluating drone to purchase and we think we found the perfect one. Before we buy it we need to check how long it may be able to stay in the air for. Its battery capacity is 2,590 ampere hours, we want to spend 80% of its battery before bringing it down so we will let battery discharge remain at 80, its battery voltage is 7.3v and in the air it will be a total of about 250 grams.

After hitting calculate we get an estimated max flight time of 18.69 minutes.
