A deadline is a specific date that something needs to be completed by. This can include school projects, homework, work projects, or just about anything really.
According to the Merriam-Webster website, in the 1860s, a 'dead line' was a line within or around a prison. Prisoners would be shot for crossing the 'dead line'. The sense of deadline that is most commonly found today (“a date or time before which something must be done”) did not begin to see use until the early 20th century.
Deadlines can be good to ensure things are done in a timely manner. Some people do not react well to deadlines and it can cause them to have anxiety or to be rushing their work, making it worse quality. It all depends on the situation and the people involved.
