If you are questioning if cooking oil can be replaced by butter or margarine the answer is yes, in most cases. If you need to cook a dish but need to oil the pan but have no oil, butter or margarine works just as well. If you actually need oil in the dish then this is not a 1:1 replacement.

How do you Convert Oil to Butter Amounts?

If we need to convert liquid cooking oil to an amount of butter we can do so by specifying the amount of liquid oil needed. Then we can employ the following formula to get our amount of butter:

How to Use the Oil to Butter Tool

Having to convert an amount of liquid oil to butter can be done easily with our tool. The steps include:

  1. Enter the amount of liquid cooking oil needed.

  2. Hit calculate and get the amount of butter needed instantly!

Example Calculation

Let's say we are cooking some steak and the recipe is calling for 1/4 cup of liquid cooking oil. We just realized we do not have any oil in the house and will need to resort to butter instead. We can use this tool to find out how much butter we should be using instead. Since we need only 1/4 of a cup of oil we will enter .25 into the field and then change the unit to be cups.

We can now hit calculate and get the amount of butter needed to be 5.14 tablespoons, but we can convert this to cups if needed by choosing it from the dropdown menu. In cups, we would need .32 cups of butter to replace the .25 cups of oil.

Oil to Butter - Frequently Asked Questions

If one stick of butter is equal to about 8 tablespoons, following a general rule of thumb we would then say 6 tablespoons of oil is its equivalent. This is not a precise conversion but can be used where this amount of oil does not need to be 100% accurate.

1 Cup of oil is equal to about 1.33 cups of butter or margarine.

Both butter and oil can be used when cooking different dishes and will have their own effect on it. So depending on the recipe, one or the other may actually be better.

When substituting butter for oil when baking, you should melt the butter, then measure it out and let it cool before adding it to the mixing bowl, then proceed as you normally would.
