Board foot, sometimes said as board feet, is a unit of measurement for the volume of wood boards that someone has. One board foot is equal to a board that is one foot in length, one foot in width, and one inch in thickness.

How do you Calculate Board Feet?

Calculating board foot can be done with the following variables:

  • Number of boards

  • Board length

  • Board width

  • Board thickness
Each board will have its own board foot value and then to get the total board foot value for all the board you multiply that value by the number of them. The formula for finding the board foot of a single board is:

Where:
  • BF = Board foot

  • L = Board length

  • W = Board width

  • T = Board thickness

Understanding Your Results

If you get a board foot of 7 that means your board or boards are equal to a single board that is 7x7x7. Remember, this tool and metric is only accurate if each wood board is the same dimensions.

Example Calculation

Let's say you found a stack of wood boards in your garage. There is a total of 25 of them and they are each 10 inches long, 3 inches wide and 2 inches thick. We can use these values to find the board foot value. We will enter each value into their appropriate field and then leave each unit as inches since that is correct for our situation.

We can now hit calculate and get a board feet value of 10.42.
