What is the Dog Size Calculator?

Our dog size calculator is intended to be used by those who want an idea of how big their puppy may grow to be. This tool is by no means going to be definitive, we use a formula that will give you an estimate of how large it will grow to be but may be very far off at the end of the day. Keep this in mind when using this tool, we do not want to lead you astray.

How to Calculate Dog Size

When using our dog size estimator, there are two formulas that are used. One is used when the dog is less than 12 weeks old, the other is for dogs older than 12 weeks. They are as such:

  1. 12 Weeks or younger: Dog Size = weight * (52 / age)

  2. Older than 12 weeks: Dog Size = weight * Growth Factor
In this calculation, Growth Factor is equal to 1 + (40 / age). This makes the number scale with the dogs current age, making it provide a result that is more realistic to the dog's current weight and age.

Understanding Your Results

When you hit calculate, you will see your results which is just your dog's estimated adult weight. This weight is shown in pounds by default but can be converted to ounces or kilograms. If the dog is healthy and following a good general diet, the resulting weight is likely going to be very close to the dog's actual adult weight.

Limitations of Estimating a Dog's Size

As mentioned before, there are some limiting factors that may make the estimator more incorrect. The calculation our tool employs does not take into account the dog's breed, their parents, their diet, their level of exercise, their health, or any other real-world variable.

How to Use the Dog Size Calculator

Our tool is very easy to use and will instantly give you your results. The steps to use this calculator includes:

  1. Input your dog's current age. If you are unsure, use your best guess, it does not have to be exact. Alternatively, if you know your dog's weight and age from a prior vet appointment, you can insert those data points into the fields.

  2. Insert your pup's current weight, weighing them at home if necessary. Be sure to select the correct unit of weight measurement, by default pounds is the selected unit.

  3. Hit calculate and see how large your dog may grow to be as an adult! Feel free to change the unit of measurement for the result that is being displayed if necessary.

Calculation Example

Let's say you got a new German Shepherd puppy. He is 8 weeks old and already 16 pounds. Using this formula: Adult Dog Weight = 16 * (52 / 8), we get the answer of 104 lbs.

Dog Size Estimator - Frequently Asked Questions

There is no way to tell for sure how big your dog will be. This depends on many factors with the main being your dog's breed. If you have a breed that is small typically, your dog will likely fall in line. Then other factors that can affect a dog's growth is their diet, their level of exercise, overall health and wellness, and their lineage.

Over the years there are some basic ways to gauge how big your dog will grow up to be. One being how large their paws are as a puppy. If they have very large paws they will slowly grow into them, if their paws are not that large you know they have not too much growing to do. Aside from that, looking at the puppy's parents was the next best way to gauge how large they will grow to be. With our dog size calculator, you can take out some of the guess work and estimate their adult size based on their current size.

Each dog continues to experience growth for different periods of time. Larger breeds typically continue to grow for up to 2 years or more at times.
